India’s QR-code payment system is convenient for residents, but a foreign visitor may not have an Indian bank account or mobile number. UPI One World is designed to bridge that gap through an authorised prepaid wallet that can be used for UPI merchant payments.
NPCI has used UPI One World for international visitors at major events, including a 2026 pilot for delegates from more than 40 countries at the India AI Impact Summit.
What is UPI One World?
It is a prepaid UPI-enabled wallet for eligible foreign visitors. Instead of linking an Indian bank account, the visitor completes onboarding with an authorised issuer, loads the wallet using supported methods and pays merchants by scanning UPI QR codes.
Do visitors need an Indian bank account?
The 2026 NPCI pilot specifically allowed eligible international visitors to make P2M UPI payments without an Indian bank account or Indian mobile number.
How onboarding can work
In the 2026 summit pilot, users completed personal details, passport and visa checks, selfie verification, set a UPI PIN and received a UPI ID through the authorised app.
Exact onboarding, participating issuers, limits and availability can change, so travellers should check the current NPCI or authorised-provider information before relying on it.
How payments work
- Load the eligible wallet.
- Scan a merchant’s UPI QR code.
- Review the merchant and amount.
- Authorise the payment using the wallet’s supported method.
What happens to unused balance?
NPCI’s 2026 pilot said unused balance could be transferred back to the original payment source subject to applicable foreign-exchange rules.
Is UPI One World available to every tourist everywhere?
Do not assume a past event pilot means universal availability at every airport or for every nationality. The service depends on authorised issuers, KYC rules and current rollout. Check official information shortly before travel.
UPI for NRIs is a different route
NRIs with eligible NRE/NRO accounts and supported international mobile numbers can have separate UPI options through participating banks and apps. That is different from the prepaid visitor-wallet model.
Final takeaway
UPI One World can make QR payments easier for eligible foreign visitors who do not have an Indian bank account, but availability and onboarding rules can change. Verify the current authorised issuer and limits before depending on it for a trip.
